I realized the importance of making students reflect on what they learned and use it so that they can learn more.

You have summarized the 2 most important points about the IPP: Understanding by reflection and applying what they have learned through action/tests.
August 22, 2011 at 9:54 am
I learned that the main point of this lecture is touching the affective side of the students. Making the students understand the importance of learning. Moreover, I learned that effective teaching is not teacher-centered but student-centered.
August 22, 2011 at 1:12 pm
Yes, we tend to focus on the intellectual side only, which is necessary, but not enough. You are so right in saying that effective teaching is student-centered: It is the student who should work harder than the teacher so he or she will learn more.

When our students graduate our schools, we hope they can discern themselves. But especially in junior high school, they can’t discern themselves yet. When and how are students able to discern, and what can we do about it?
August 22, 2011 at 12:46 pm
This will depend on your formation program or ethics class.

Fr.Go said “students are asked to do now”
I agree….
but these chance is very few…
test is often asked only knowledge…..

Don’t give up. Change takes time.

This is the first time iI listen to IPP. It is very helpful for me as a teacher in Vietnam, where there is no school run by any religion. But I think I can use IPP in my teaching as well.
August 22, 2011 at 10:00 am
Students are of many type and are on different stage. How can I assist them to practice IPP personally? So It is important to know their context.
August 22, 2011 at 10:00 am
I sympathize that encourage our students to become active learners is really important.
I want to know examples;
How do we make the tests which lead student to act?
August 22, 2011 at 12:48 pm
Tests can be products that students are asked to create or performances that they are asked to deliver. The important thing is that these products or performances are real-life.

I think, learning model are applying in IPP base on the experiential learning model. That is good, because as J. Piaget (I am not sure) wrote “learning is a process whereby knowledge is create through a transformation by experience”.
It is excellent if all teachers in IPP can understand thoroughly and apply this learning model

Comment:
I think, in this case, we have to re-construct all school curriculum based on IPP. We often ask, what is a Jesuit high school. The answer is that the school adopting IPP.
August 22, 2011 at 12:48 pm
Yes, the curriculum has to be redesigned, but slowly.

My interest is religious formation for students. How can I teach the value of ”Be men for others” by IPP method?
August 22, 2011 at 12:50 pm
Thank you. This is so important. Action should emphasize service for others. This is the best “test.”
August 22, 2011 at 10:02 am
Thank you for your interesting lecture. and I have a one question. What is a spirituality (that wrriting in spiritual excercise)?
I feel it is not clear. I think to listen to the lecture ,just “How to study”. So I think to need more clearly a spiritual perspective. And I am expecting to develop the IPP, and we collaborate with.
August 22, 2011 at 1:03 pm
We are willing to help and collaborate with you.
Spirituality, for those who believe in God, is a way to find God and meaning in their life. IPP is a way to study and learn based on the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

The students always say “Why do we study math ? Is this useful ?”
I teach math. I do the lecture for 25 minutes, so I make the students practice for 25 minutes. When they have questions , they call me .
The teachers in our school are too busy to prepare for the school enough, so I often lose reflection.
August 22, 2011 at 1:04 pm
If you use half the time for students to be active in their exercises, that’s already very good. It’s true teachers are always busy, but reflection is very important because your students will find out why Math is useful.

I felt the importance of doing IPP again in may class and in my whole school. Doing IPP is keeping identity as a jesuit high school. From now on we have to plan to develop IPP in every field in our school.Teachers should not do everything , but the students should do more themselves on learning.
August 22, 2011 at 1:05 pm
This is so important but hard to do. But let’s try our best!
August 22, 2011 at 10:04 am
I learned importance about “reflection”.
Many non christian teacher are teaching in Japan.
What Is the “reflection” religious for them?
When non christian teacher teach, can we call the teaching “IPP” ?
How can they learn “reflection”?
August 22, 2011 at 1:06 pm
Reflection does not have to be related to religion. It is just encouraging students to organize and connect what they have learned by asking them the 3 questions: What did you learn? How did you learn? Why did you learn it?
August 22, 2011 at 10:06 am
I’m really inspired the guidance and think it important to understand the vision and the method. Also I wanted to know the way how to make my student understood religious life in daily.
August 22, 2011 at 1:07 pm
Thank you. Yes, religious life is something very important. I hope teachers of literature, ethics, and civics/history can also mention the value of religious life.
August 22, 2011 at 10:09 am
I’ve not been familiar with I.P.P, actually I heard of (learned) it here for the first time.
It sounds very useful, effective approach. So I’ll try to make it a rule to ask my students “WHAT”, “HOW” and “WHY” in class, because I tend to explain too much and speak more than them.
How do Xavier teachers ask students in exams?
Don’t they do any multiple-choice test?
August 22, 2011 at 1:08 pm
This is excellent–your decision to ask them the WHAT, HOW, and WHY questions! Good luck!
We in Xavier still use multiple choice tests, but we also try to make students DO more than just remember by giving them real-life cases so they can apply what they have learned.
August 22, 2011 at 10:10 am
I empathize that encouraging our students to become active learners is really important.
Q;
How to make the tests which lead student to act.
August 22, 2011 at 1:09 pm
ACTION here means using and applying what students have learned. So the test can include real-world cases and students are asked what they would do by using what they have learned. This way the teacher finds out if the students have learned and if they can use what they have learned in the real world.
August 22, 2011 at 10:10 am
What I learned about the “IPP” at a Work shop by Fr. Artuer Leger, but, Ihave never heard about the “IPP” in my school in Japan, so, I could’nt understand the “IPP” deeply.
But, I noticed that 5 point “contxt ,experience, refrection, action, evalution ” was very important to teach. And you tought the example “if you teach math, you have to teach why this subject is important” , “after the examinaon student do the prezentation what to learn” , ” student have to do what to learn now.”etc… . I would like to do in my school in Japan. Thank you very much.
August 22, 2011 at 1:10 pm
Good luck, Iwai! It will not be easy, but it is important. Thank you!
